If you’re keen on making your own jams and preserves, learning how to correctly sterilise your jars before use is essential. If the jars and their lids haven’t been properly sterilised, any bacteria present can and will spoil your carefully crafted preserves. So here is a quick and easy guide to making sure all your hard work doesn’t go to waste!

Oven Method
1) Wash jars and lids in hot soapy water and rinse thoroughly.
2) Place the jars on an oven tray and put them in a preheated oven at 120° C / 248° F for 10-20 minutes. Do not place lids in the oven as this may damage them.
3) To sterilise the lids safely, place the lids in a medium saucepan and cover with water. Boil for 10 minutes. Carefully remove lids with a pair of tongs and allow them to air dry.
4) Once sterilised, avoid touching the interior surface of the jars or lids, or you will need to sterilise them again!

Dishwasher Method
1) Wash jars and lids in hot soapy water and rinse thoroughly.
2) Place the jars and lids in the top rack of your dishwasher and run them through a wash cycle on the hottest temperature setting. Do not add detergent or other items.
3) Once sterilised, carefully remove jars and lids and allow them to air dry. Avoid touching the interior surface of the jars or lids, or you will need to sterilise them again!
